The township of Howmore lies on the west coast of South Uist in an area widely covered with machair (shell sand) forming a rich soil for grass and a patchwork of colourful wild flowers in the summer season. There is also easy access to the long sandy beaches nearby. The youth hostel overlooks a ruined church and a burial ground of the Clan Ranald chiefs. A wonderful setting full of history. Operated by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust. No advance booking, sheet sleeping bags required: Overnight Fee £15 / Junior Overnight Fee £8 / Camping Fee £10.
