On the doorstep are 15 Munro hills and good tracks through the valleys for both walking and mountain biking. The youth hostel is only accessible on foot or by mountain bike, please allow at least 3-4 hours for the walk in. (see How to find us for more information). To help you plan for your stay at Glen Affric we have compiled some practical advice about the hostel and a check list for packing.
A wind turbine and solar panels provide limited electricity and a wood burning stove provides heating in the kitchen and lounge area as well as hot water. A hot shower is available.
There is no heating in the bed rooms so it is essential to bring a warm sleeping bag.
Due to the limited amount of electricity there is no fridge/freezer or microwave oven at the hostel so please plan your meals accordingly. Otherwise the kitchen is well equipped with hobs, oven, grill and an old fashioned kettle.
There is no food or drink for sale at the youth hostel.
There is no refuse collection service at the youth hostel so we ask everybody to carry out what they carry in.
We do not allow outdoor footwear in the main building so a pair of slippers or other indoor footwear is handy.
Glen Affric is totally off-line. There is no phone or internet connection. Plenty of board games and books are available for your entertainment. A rare chance to experience life as it was before the internet.
