The pilot for a pre-apprenticeship programme with West College Scotland (WCS) took place at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel in February 2015, with 10 participants taking part along with 2 teachers. The group of students spent 2 days on the banks of Loch Lomond gaining hands on experience of the science behind the electrical trade.

During the 2 day camp - supported by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) - the youngsters donned wetsuits and helmets to investigate the science behind hydro power, and took to the hills with Boots and Paddles outdoor activities company to learn about wind power generation.

The pilot came about when Joe Mulholland from WCS read an article in the Times Education Supplement Scotland about SYHA’s Life and Employability Skills project in partnership with the Scottish Power Foundation.  He contacted  SYHA to see if something similar could be developed for FE students on pre-apprenticeship programmes.  The pilot went very well and the intention is for more to follow.
