Each year SYHA Hostelling Scotland welcomes a group of young volunteers from Germany to spend a year volunteering in our youth hostels. During their time with SYHA volunteers Klara Kammerer and Katrin Müller, have had the opportunity to explore both the cities and countryside of Scotland.

We asked both girls to finish these sentences, to give an insight into how they have found the experience of volunteering with SYHA! They have also shared some amazing photos with us of their journey so far…

Klara Kammerer

Volunteering with SYHA is a great way to…

Get to know people from all over the world, to improve your English and also to see many of the beautiful places Scotland has to offer.

Klara: "I was almost on top of Meall a' Bhuachaille when I took this picture of the sunset. It was so nice up there and the view of the Loch Morlich, with the sunset was spectacular."

Klara:"These are four reindeers from the reindeer center in Glenmore".

During my volunteering so far I have…

Made a lot of beds, I have answered the phone, I have made many bookings, I have talked to people from all over the world. I have done and learned a large variety of things while volunteering, there's always something new to learn and that's the best part.

Klara: "A beautiful susent over Loch Ness".

Klara: "Here you can see Tobermory. Lars, Katrin, Nathalie and I went there when we visited Joost in October"

My favourite place I have visited in Scotland/my favourite travel experience in Scotland so far is…

It is really hard to pick my favourite place I have visited in Scotland so far, I loved it nearly everywhere I went. Edinburgh is one of the nicest cities I've ever been to. There are plenty of things to do in Edinburgh! Whether you want to go to the sea, go for a hike or go on a shopping trip, Edinburgh has everything your heart desires.

I think regarding the Highlands and nature of Scotland my favourite place is the Cairngorm National Park, the mountains and views are so pretty. I hiked up Meall a' Bhuachaille and Cairngorm with Lars and I couldn't get over the beautiful view.

Klara: "A view of Edinburgh's skyline, from the top of the Camera Obscura building".

Klara: "This is on the top of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. You can see volunteer Lars walking in front of me".

Katrin Müller

Volunteering with SYHA is a great way to…

Meet new people, see a lot of Scotland and get some work and life experience!

Katrin: snowy Scottish hills

During my volunteering so far I have…

Learned a lot of things, including working skills like how to clean a room, or make a new booking, but also to take care of myself and survive on my own.

Katrin: visiting the reindeer centre at Glenmore with the other volunteers.

My favourite place I have visited in Scotland/my favourite travel experience in Scotland so far is…

Glencoe because it’s an absolute stunning landscape. But there are so many nice places here in Scotland.

Katrin: foggy hills in the beautiful Glencoe
