Reasons to visit

Birsay is a great location for history buffs - the island really is bursting with ancient history. It has been settled continuously since Neolithic times, more than 5000 years ago, and is the ancient capital of Orkney.

Whilst on Birsay you can see chambered cairns, standing stones, brochs and Pict settlements. The island was a centre of Viking power in the 11th century under Thorfinn the Mighty (place names and ruins testify to a blend of Norse and Scots settlers) and in the late 16th century a palace was built there by Robert Stewart, a son of King James V, 1st Earl of Orkney.

Birsay also boasts spectacular scenery, with towering cliffs with abundant bird and wildlife. Great beaches around the island ensure lots of opportunities for that perfect Instagram shot.
