Local Attractions

 

Bod of Gremista

A restored 18thC fishing booth located 1 mile north of the town centre.

 

Shetland Museum and Archives

2 floors of artefacts, archival materials, an exhibition area, public art and a restaurant and shop.

 

Clickimin Broch

 A fortified site just under a mile from the town centre. It was occupied from the 7th C BC to the 6th C AD.

 

Up-Helly-Aa Exhibition:

 Explains the annual Viking Fire festival (mid May to mid September)

 

Fiddle and Accordion festival:

Annual event usually held in mid October

 

Folk festival:

Annual event usually held in the last week in April

Walkers

 

Clickimin Broch

A heriatage and coastal walk from Clickimin Broch anti-clockwise round the Ness of sand. The Ness is reached via Kantersted Road and by taking a right turn before seafield playing field on the road to Lower Sand. Access is through a kissing gate to a sandy beach. Look out for views of Bressay and lerwick, WWII gun emplacement, ducks and geese.

Start point Tourist Information Centre, Market Cross.

Distance: 14 miles

Time: 3.4 miles

Route: From sea front A970 S to roundabout then N Clickimin Centre campsite. Track up stony Hill and Ladies Drive to A970 W to Bridge of Finch. Scallowy, return E to B9703 (signposted Scumburgh) SE to A970, NE to lerwick

Kayaking

Wildlife:

 

Shetland is a bird watching paradise. Look out for birds such as Kittiwakes, Puffins, razorbills. Mammals include harbour porpoises which are becoming rare, killer whales, seals and Shetland ponies.
