Great atmosphere and best setting we saw so far in 15 years of hosteling in Scotland. You come here for the mountains and valleys, not for luxury accommodations. Also a plus: now offering breakfast here. Not that we minded, but Security is non-existent in this hostel - dorms with no keys, except for the family rooms, no lockers or other secure storage. Didn't have any of the window-covering midge-nets we saw in other hostels.

This is one the "rustic" locations so you don't necessarily go for the facilities. The facilities are okay, nothing special, but if you want to be away from it all out in the middle of nowhere, this is the place to go. It is beautiful and has some great hiking!

Glenbrittle has a wonderful atmosphere and good facilities, which is why I keep going back, even though it is closed during the day (even on wet days) and a big dorm and lack of soundproofing means you need good ear-plugs! But don't let them scrap the sitting-room!

The hostel is remote, for the good and bad. The good side is a hostel surrounded by an almost "virgin" nature. There's barely a proper access-road. The bad though, IMHO, over-weights the serene and remote locale. The hostel has no wi-fi or internet access, the receptionist barely knew anything about the area around (the somewhat-famous Cullin Hills). In such an off-the-road place your two best friends are left-luggage and guest-kitchen. Sadly Grenbrittle has no left-luggage service, and a kitchen that more aptly should be called a "food-heating" area. It has a water-boiler, a microwave, an electric stove. But it has barely any tools and proper dishes. There's 1 salad ball for all guests, a "chef knife" that's so blunt you can't cut yourself even if you tried and cooking utensils that are fitting for instant pasta but not actual cooking. To sum: Awesome weekend getaway, ill-equipped backpackers hostel.

A wonderfully located hostel, with excellent facilities (kitchen & loo's etc.). The staff we met were welcoming and friendly. It's worth coming here just for the atmosphere in this beautiful timber building. Although there isn't a village shop nearby, a limited number of items can be bought at the hostel (milk, bread rolls etc.), enough to get you by for a few days. We were on bicycles, so brought some things with us. If you have transport, Portree isn't far away, also there is a campsite shop at the end of the road. No public transport down the valley. We can recommend the walk along the coast alonside the bay, the Fairy Pools, the track to Slichgan and any of the coires nestling under the ridges. You don't have to be a rock climber/scrambler to enjoy the area. No pub. so bring your own!

Glenbrittle offers a fabulous remote Scotland experience with good clean and warm basic facility. Do bring with you all the food and rations you need - the hostel shop is extremely limited in what it sells, and its 8 miles out to the nearest shop, with no buses! There are walks to suit every taste, from easy beach, coast and forest rambles, through to technical expeditioins via hard rock routes to the highest peaks. Good boots and full waterproffs are essential!

Excellent traditional type hostel with superb access to the Cullin ridge and corries, also a beautiful beach and costal paths within easy walking distance. The midges in August were unbelievable but we found a mixture of jungle juice and skin so soft stopped us from being bitten. A midge head net is advisable. In future I will use the Mallaig ferry rather than the bridge to cut down the amount of time spent driving.

It would be useful to have a bed number allocated at time of booking as many people travel in groups and would like to be located as near to friends as possible. Also giving the dimensions of the food storage shelves would be beneficial.

A word of warning - don't let the front 'drive'wheels of your car go over the edge of the hard standing. When we arrived a German lass called Connie had done just that and was firmly stuck in the mud. Fortunately I also drive a Vauxhall and my towing ring fitted in the rear of her car, so tow rope attached and the car was soon on the hard again.
