Walkers

Shorter Walks

Broadford Marble Line

An easy-going walk tracing the line of the railway line for the marble quarries at Kilchrist. Good views of Blaven and the surrounding hills.

Visit Website

Dun Ringill, Kilmarie

A short, attractive walk to the remains of a medieval castle, visiting a Chambered Cairn on the way back.

Visit Website

Rubha Ardnish, Broadford

A pleasant though pathless walk on a little-visited part of Skye's coast. Excellent for bird-watching and for views in fine weather.

Visit Website

Prince Charlie's Cave, Elgol

This short but rough walk visits the cave where Bonnie Prince Charlie spent his last night on Skye before escaping by boat once more. Excellent coastal scenery and stunning views throughout. Boggy path to the bay; awkward boulders on the beach and scramble up to the cave. Access to the cave is for a couple of hours either side of low tide, make sure to check times beforehand.

Visit Website

Rubh an Eireannaich, Broadford

A picturesque walk with an easy start leading to pebbly beaches with good views over Broadford. The whole circuit is more strenuous with good opportunities for spotting wildlife and flowers.

Visit Website

Kinloch Forest and Leitir Fura

A delightful walk through fine woodland. The views across the Sound of Sleat to the mainland are superb.

Visit Website

Kylerhea Otter Haven

Easy walk with lovely views over the Kyle strait to the mainland. The otter hide at the midway point gives a good opportunity to spot otters, seals and other wildlife. Picnic tables and toilets near start.

Armadale hill and woodland

A pleasant woodland walk to Armadale hill viewpoint and walk back past Armadale Castle, once the ancestral home of the Clan Macdonald. The walk does not give access to Armadale Castle gardens.

Moderate Walks

Point of Sleat

A walk to the lighthouse at the southernmost point of Skye. Good spot for seeing marine mammals and views to the islands of Eigg and Rum. A delightful detour to a lovely sandy beach at Camas Daraich is recommended.

Visit Website

Boreraig and Suisnish: The Cleared Coast

The ruined coastal villages of Suisnish and Boreraig are a reminder of the Clearances; the walk to visit them gives an easy though long circuit with fine views.

Visit Website

Beinn na Caillich and the Broadford Red Hills

The Broadford Red Hills give a circuit typical of the Red Hills; a steep and strenuous ascent, followed by excellent ridge walking and fine views. Steep boulder fields and scree path, together with rough moorland on lower slopes. No scrambling involved.

Loch Coruisk circuit (access by boat)

Loch Coruisk, at the very heart of the Cuillin, is the most magnificent of all Scottish freshwater lochs. The walk around its shores gives unmatched views into the mountains, a small price to pay for the bogs and wet feet. There is an extremely boggy path throughout, not always easy to follow and also crosses rough, rocky slopes in places. The crossing of the river at the foot of the loch (and indeed the head) could be impossible after heavy rains.

Luib and Torrin Straths circuit

This walk crosses from coast to coast and back again across one of Skye's narrowest sections, using two old routes between the hills. It gives a quiet walk through wild countryside with some good views.

Walks for the More Experienced

Bla Bheinn (Blaven)

Bla Bheinn is one of the most magnificent mountains in Britain; a great isolated citadel of rock with fabulous views and all the character of the main Cuillin Ridge. Its ascent is straightforward by Cuillin standards but very rocky.

Visit Website

Glamaig and the northern Red Hills

Glamaig and the northern Red Hills give a fine circuit with punishing scree but unparalleled views.

Visit Website

Marsco from Sligachan

Marsco is the finest of the Red Hills and is well seen from Sligachan. Despite not even being high enough for Corbett status, the summit is a fantastic viewpoint - probably the best amongst the Grahams - with swathes of blue sea and jagged mountains all around.

Families

  • Good Self catering facilities
  • Private rooms, ideal for families
  • A generous garden area for play, as well as games and plenty of pencils and paper for young artists

We understand better than anyone the implications of travelling with young children. That is why we are doing all we can to make your hostelling experience memorable for all the right reasons.

Children and families are welcome at all our hostels, although we have  highlighted a number of hostels within our network as being “Family Hostels” as they are particularly well-suited to travelling with and entertaining younger children.

Family hostels not only have private rooms available, many with en-suite facilities, they also carry practical items such as travel cots, high chairs, microwaves and toys. In addition there is normally a TV and games room as well as extensive private gardens on site where the kids can let off some steam. Close to great attractions and activities, these family hostels offer a great base from which to explore the area. Our helpful staff are a great source of knowledge on places to visit and things to see and do.

Hostelling is a very friendly and relaxed way to travel and our ethos actively involves children.

Staff Recommendations

Frauke, Manager

“Dinosaur footprints? - Keep your eyes open for fossils on the shores around Broadford Bay and nearby Loch Slapin. Or just watch out for some original Skye marble (and fantastic views!) on the Broadford Marble Line.”
