My first hostel experience! I liked the atmosphere, it was laid back and friendly. Staff are helpful. The facilities are basic but adequete. It was clean but remember things are only as clean as the last person to use them and everything is shared. The quiet room is very relaxing. The location is great, very central. I was surprised that everyone seems to go to bed at a reasonable time (not sure if that always happens) so I got a good nights sleep. The other travellers seemed fine. They do a pre-booked breakfast for £4.25 which is continental. I thought this was a little over priced. The beds are okay, I had a lower bunk but there were no steps to top bunks or safety rails which could have been a bit of a worry.

I love this hostel. The setting on the habour front affords stunning views of the mountains South of Loch Broom, across glittering waters...especially on a sun-drenched morning in August. The intimate lounge, dining area, kitchen and reading room are excellent vantage points to relax and take in this absorbing vista.

Great hostel in a great town. Ullapool has all the shops, pubs and cafes you could want, and a nice little museum and good local walks as well, and it's really easy to get there from big places like Inverness or Fort William and to get local buses that go on further north. The hostel has a big kitchen, two really nice living room type areas and a massive dining room. Nice bright dorms and bathrooms too. Wardens were really helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay there again.

The views are all the brochure claims and the staff were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Don't expect to much room in the dorms—although comfortable the beds were very small and there was no room for belongings let alone lockers. I was pointed to a lovely little cafe in the street behind the hostel called "The Tea Shop" in which I got a lovely breakfast and pot of tea for not much money. Yay!

Great little hostel, right on the shore, with fantastic sea views. The guy on the desk was very helpful and friendly. Facilities were as expected, basic but clean. Only gripe it the bunk bed which was quite small and did not have a safety rail on the top bunk... as I had been to the pub, I felt safer putting the mattress on the floor! Would stay here again, no problem.

This is a lovely hostel in a great wee town. I stayed here for a week and found the staff were really friendly and the facilities more than adequate. The view from the hostel looking out over Loch Broom is stunning, i didnt want to leave!! This hostel is a great base for hill walking, cycling or just chilling out. I had an amazing time here and i'll most certainly be visiting again. I would strongly recommend visiting Ullapool and staying in this hostel.

I wanted to do the ''Postman's walk'' from Achininver to Ullapool, and I did. However, I nearly got into difficulty on what should have been a simple walk. I found that the Achininver hostel had closed early, so I couldn't start early from there, and the only bus from Ullapool arrives at the start around mid-day, not a good time to begin this walk in October, perhaps. Also, I stupidly did not carry a decent map. I found the track very well marked in places but a recent landslip had erased the trail at the midpoint, which delayed me, and I lost the trail completely towards the end and had to make my own way off the mountain in fading light. I walked in to Ullapool at 22.30 elated, having had a wonderful day in glorious sunshine. However, I have nothing but respect for the Postman who used to do this walk in all weathers for two shillings and three pence a go. My advice for we lesser mortals: get local advice, take a good map, start early. And be sure to stay at Ullapool SYHA Hostel.

Good Hostel. Very clean and the staff are great. Watch out for: They lock the door to the hostel from @10:30 to 17:00 hours every day. If the weather is bad and you get wet make sure you have a change of clothing, a towel and some kind of modesty screen to change behind. The traffic warden will enforce the parking out the front of the hostel. He knocks off at 5 most days.

Hostel has a fantastic location right on sea front with amazing views. A busy hostel with the ferry terminal just along the road and an interesting range of hostellers. Good choice of eating options: a large Tesco about a 10 minute walk away; a local Mace along the road; a selection of nearby pubs, cafes and hotel restaurants for a treat. Reasonable bus connections and parking possible outside the hostel for just 30 minutes from 09.00 to 17.00 every day (daytime restrictions are to prevent ferry travellers leaving cars on street while they are away - sometimes for 2 weeks). However there are no restrictions a couple of streets back from hostel and you can park outside from 16.30 to 9.30.

Ask about what is happening in Ullapool before you settle in - in case you miss out on something special. There are traditional musicians playing in the pubs but only on certain nights .... and well worth a listen.

Ullapool again, still the same very friendly staff! Thanks a lot for the feeling at home in this beautiful, lively town! The Monday evening at the Argyll Hotel was great. I'm sure I'll be back again, to join the folk session there. :-)

Ullapool was great! The rooms and beds are small and the hostel is closed over the day, but the atmosphere is really nice! A lovely small town surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Stay there and don't just travel through for the ferry! ;-) Take a walk up to Ullapool Hill or to the Rhue Lighthouse. For Breakfast I can recommend "The Teastore" right around the corner , the best fresh Fish 'n Chips you get at the Take Away opposite of the Ferry Terminal. For a pint in the evening choose the quite Ceilidh Place or the more lively The Ferry Boat Inn, a few doors away from the hostel. But make sure to return in time to the hostel or you will have to climb up the rainpipe! ;-).

When driving in the dark on the way up to Ullapool....beware of the deer. Especially the last 30 miles to Ullapool. They appear from nowhere and often you have no time to stop. Hitting a deer in the car, usually results in the animal having to be shot, it usually damages your car and is a very traumatic experience. Drive slowly and carefully...!

This hostel is closed from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm which is not good if a cycling or walking trip has to be cancelled due to rain,as you cant get in to dry of. Also it is closed from 11.30 pm Monday to Wednesday and 12.00 am Thursday till Sunday. This is not good if you are at a music event in the town,as some do not end till after 12.00am. I found both these closing times very annoying. The hostel is in a good location with great views ,this made up a little bit for the bad entry times of the hostel.
