Ullapool was great! The rooms and beds are small and the hostel is closed over the day, but the atmosphere is really nice! A lovely small town surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Stay there and don't just travel through for the ferry! ;-) Take a walk up to Ullapool Hill or to the Rhue Lighthouse. For Breakfast I can recommend "The Teastore" right around the corner , the best fresh Fish 'n Chips you get at the Take Away opposite of the Ferry Terminal. For a pint in the evening choose the quite Ceilidh Place or the more lively The Ferry Boat Inn, a few doors away from the hostel. But make sure to return in time to the hostel or you will have to climb up the rainpipe! ;-).

When driving in the dark on the way up to Ullapool....beware of the deer. Especially the last 30 miles to Ullapool. They appear from nowhere and often you have no time to stop. Hitting a deer in the car, usually results in the animal having to be shot, it usually damages your car and is a very traumatic experience. Drive slowly and carefully...!

With the motorcycle the moved average distance per hour varies from 28 tot 63 km. So don't plan trips of more than 250 km a day. Take a good coat against the rain. Take acount with the windspeed.

This hostel is closed from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm which is not good if a cycling or walking trip has to be cancelled due to rain,as you cant get in to dry of. Also it is closed from 11.30 pm Monday to Wednesday and 12.00 am Thursday till Sunday. This is not good if you are at a music event in the town,as some do not end till after 12.00am. I found both these closing times very annoying. The hostel is in a good location with great views ,this made up a little bit for the bad entry times of the hostel.

traveling from the north will involve finding the railbridge crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. I found lifting my bike with panniers quite a difficult job but it saves about 8 road miles

Kitchen superb with hot water for tea/ coffee always on tap (literally!). Dining area best I've experienced in any hostel in Scotland. Food storage facilities very good. Staff were very friendly and genuine, made the stay for us a very pleasurable experience. Big thanks to the managers for all their efforts to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

A nice hostel but in terms of service and facilities the full day lock out is draconian in modern hostel service terms. It was only the friendliness of one staff member who allowed me to store my bag on the day of departure and pick it up before 5.00pm.
