- Information on what to do with kids in and around Ullapool
We understand better than anyone the implications of
travelling with young children. That is why we are doing all we can
to make your hostelling experience memorable for all the right
reasons.
Children and families are welcome at all our hostels, although we
have highlighted a number of hostels within our network as
being “Family Hostels” as they are particularly well-suited to
travelling with and entertaining younger children.
Family hostels not only have private rooms available, many
with en-suite facilities, they also carry practical items such as
travel cots, high chairs, microwaves and toys. In addition there is
normally a TV and games room as well as extensive private gardens
on site where the kids can let off some steam. Close to great
attractions and activities, these family hostels offer a great base
from which to explore the area. Our helpful staff are a great
source of knowledge on places to visit and things to see and
do.
Hostelling is a very friendly and relaxed way to travel and
our ethos actively involves children.

Green Tourism
SYHA Hostelling Scotland (Ullapool)
Environmental policy
Ullapool Hostel is located on Loch
Broom. Daily we see seals in the loch and occasionally
otters. Walking in the hills nearby it is possible to see
pine marten, deer and golden eagle. Down on the loch shore
many species of wading bird feed. As such we are constantly
reminded of the abundance and diversity of wildlife and habitat on
our doorstep and or our duty to help conserve this.
At Ullapool Hostel we are working to make our
destination more eco-friendly and are committed to working in a
sustainable way. We are undertaking the following actions in order
to achieve this and hope our guests will support us.
- We recycle all we can and encourage guests to help us (glass,
aluminium cans, plastic bottles, paper, card, batteries and light
bulbs) see the green box in the kitchen and boxes at
the back of the drying room.
- We re-use lots of things - envelopes, paper, jam
jars, you name it. We also have a swap box and book
swap
- We have a compost heap and use the black gold in our
garden and planters- see our garden at the back and bin in the
kitchen. Enjoy the wildflowers, tasty herbs and vegetables we are
growing
- We use chemicals carefully - environmentally friendly
products are used where possible and all are carefully measured
out
- We aim to use as little energy as possible by closing windows
and doors when the heating is on, switching off appliances not
needed and operating our laundry as efficiently as possible – line
drying whenever possible. We encourage guests to support us in
this.
- We provide information about and promote local food, wholefood
and organically produced produce
- We encourage people to car share, use public transport,
walk or cycle in an aim to reduce carbon footprints – see our
transport board
- We promote and support the love food hate
waste campaign – see our free food shelves
- We promote and support ‘Ullapool’s cottoned
on’ campaign against plastic bags and bag it and
bin it campaign to protect the marine environment see
our bag recycle container and cotton bags to borrow and bathroom
notices.
- Environment and wildlife: We actively protect our environment
with regular litter picks and beach cleans. We provide information
about our environment and raise awareness - see leaflets,
posters, folders - ask us about
the area. We promote local SNH, NTS and Ranger activities and
support the local wildlife watch group. We have a nature diary to
help monitor wildlife.
- We encourage wildlife - we have a bird box, bird feeders, a
wood pile and homes for insects. We garden for wildlife by planting
native trees and wildflowers.

greener, healthier planet for all to enjoy

FEEL
GOOD…
Seven things you can do to help
save the planet and support Ullapool Youth Hostel’s green
policy:
We are working to make our destination more
eco-friendly, but we need your help. We can all reduce our impact
on the environment by making choices. As a visitor you have a very
important role to play in helping us to conserve our natural assets
and become a more sustainable destination. Here are our recommended
tips on how you can help:
Conserve Energy
Reduce energy by switching off lights, turning
down heaters not needed, closing doors and windows if heating is on
and not leaving appliances on standby. The Energy Saving
Trust provides information on what you can do at home.

http://www.envirowise.wrap.org.uk/
Give the Car a Rest
Leave the car behind, if only for a day. Walk,
cycle or use public transport. We will happily provide you
with advice. Check out our transport board or
reduce carbon footprint and car share.

Shop Local
Use local products, they give you a flavour of
the area and help support local communities. We are
fortunate to have some fantastic producers of
food, drink and arts and crafts. Check out our food folder,
noticeboard and The Saturday Market at the Seaforth carpark.
http://www.fishonline.org/
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Try to avoid overly packaged goods and say no
to that extra carrier bag. Reuse one of the plastic or cotton bags
in the kitchen and support ‘Ullapool’s cottoned on’
campaign against plastic bags. You can also support us in our
efforts to recycle – put clean, squashed aluminium cans, glass,
paper, card, plastic bottles and batteries in correct bin. Take
home items which are not recyclable locally but can be commonly
recycled in urban areas
Be Water Wise
The UK has rising costs for water treatment
and flood defense so please use water wisely. Turn off the
tap when brushing your teeth and ensure taps
and showers are fully turned off. Every drop counts!
http://www.water-guide.org.uk/ www.waterwise.org.uk
Respect Nature
Help us to look after the landscape and
wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using
footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly. Ensure you follow the
Countryside Code. Smokers: please discard of your butts
thoughtfully. See leaflets/displays and ask staff for information
on things to do, ranger guided events, eco/wildlife tours and
public transport to get you there.
