A clean, well equipped hostel with a great atmosphere and a great warden... all in a stunning location. There are now plans to open it to individuals over the winter weekends. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy this area in the beauty of winter. Highly recommended

A very large hostel in the heart of Torridon. I stayed for 3 nights and still enjoyed very much the large kitchen and comfortable living rooms with sofas facing the spectacular mountains. Helpful staff (Steve) which gave me lots of trecking information during the raining days and very good drying room.

A fantastic hostel with stunning views and a range of nearby activities and facilities of various kinds eg medical available. The staff were relaxed, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable, and helped us out beyond the call of duty when we needed to contact home for an unexpected reason. For more information and stunning photos of the Torridon and Sheildaig area have a look at Steve Carter's website at shieldaig.org too.

There isn't much budget accommodation in Torridon, but that hardly matters when there's a hostel as good as this one. Somehow it never seems crowded no matter how busy it gets. You can walk or cycle from the front door to climb the best mountains in Scotland, follow stunning coastal paths, relax with excellent coffee and cake at the Torridon Stores, or watch the sun go down over Applecross - what more could you want?

The hostel has all the facilities that you need on this kind of vacation. On a day when the clouds are low, try the walk from Wester Alligin to Diabaig. It starts wet, but gets better all the way. Then go on to Craig, the bothy that was once a hostel. If the mainland is cloudy, there may yet be fine views out to the Hebrides. Put bread and jam out on the warden's bird table if he lets you, and watch for Pine Martens coming to eat it in the twilight. When you climb Slioch, don't follow the herd going simply up to the top and down the same way. Walk all around the edge of the summit plateau; and then descend by the steep stream to the East (you can cross it even though the bridge has gone) and follow the path down to Loch Maree beside the river: the waterfalls are spectacular.

A fantastic hostel! Difficult to fault. The staff were always cheerful, friendly and willing to help with advice. The hostel is clean, warm and well appointed, and is set amongst probably the most stunning part of the Scottish Highlands. Book with confidence, you wont be disappointed! A couple of tips which might help. Be aware that the nearest garage is at Kinlochewe about 10 miles from the hostel, and if that has run out of petrol (as happened during my holiday) the next closest is Lochcarron even further away. Also the shop (and cafe) at Kinlochewe , in my opinion, is better stocked than the one in Torridon.

Torridon Hostel has to have some of the best views in the world! With Liathach behind it and the loch in front, with incredible sunrises and sunsets added to the peace and solitude of the area it is just a wonderful place to be. There are many activities to suit all types so you can be as active or otherwise as you like. As for travelling to the area, I'm not sure how possible it would all be without a car. I did think about using my travel pass but changed my mind. It would have been too limiting.

This hostel is in a fantastic location and it's worth making an effort to ensure that you get a good seat in the lounge after dinner for the panoramic view, it's a grand place to spend an evening, with a glass, talking rubbish about the day you've just had at 3000 feet. The staff are invariably friendly and knowledgeable about the local area, it's a good idea to ask them for advice about any walking/cycling you're planning, and the facilities are excellent with a large, fully equipped kitchen, good sized dining room and 2 comfortable lounges. The bedrooms are pretty good, too.

Check out what is going on at the community hall along the road. They are very active and do homemade teas or lunches depending on the day in the month. We got back from a long walk around Ben Eighe to discover a community tea going on; we were sat at a table with local people, plied with mugs of tea, delicious homemade cakes and sandwiches and regaled with songs from the pianist! Excellent genuine experience as sadly not many Scots around to talk to. We found the new SMIDGE midge repellent to be much better than Skin-so-Soft; it was developed in Scotland.

Watch out for the locked drying room if you want to start off early! i.e before 07.30 (not that early for a good hill day). In can understand why this happens but residents should be given the key code in the same way as the rest of the building!

However, I would like to make it very clear that I was impressed with the Hostel and would come again - Thank you. If you are travelling from Inverness to Torrindon the nearest station is Achnasheen. There are only four (4) train services a day that run along this route. The bus services that would take you the rest of the way are also limited, therefore a warning emphasis on planning your journey before hand to customers would be helpful.

Dial-a-bus 01520 722205 before 6 p.m. the day before (http://www.hanszell.co.uk/dial-a-bus.pdf ). Useful for local rides such as Diabeg and Coire Dubh as well as to Achnasheen station, but beware the evening bus (T22N) does not run until June in 2010. Also the DMK bus (01520 722682) meets the "mid-day" trains at Strathcarron, calling at Lochcarron Stores and will take you to Torridon YH (but can't take you back to Strathcarron!). Use the reopened Torridon Stores & Cafe (http://www.perivale.demon.co.uk/).

Wonderfully located near the 'National Trust Countryside Centre'; itself part of a 16,000 acre estate of wonderful mountains and breathtaking scenery for the walker, climber, geologist and naturalist to explore, where maps, books and information on walks are available together with an exhibition of local features (most usefully an ordinance survey map of the area displayed on the outside wall of the Centre available for viewing 24 hours a day). A Deer Museum is to hand where the first collection of deer antlers I have ever seen are to be found and touched. The red deer themselves are in a field nearby. A bird viewers haven too with an observation post looking out to Loch Torridon. This Scottish Youth Hostel is extremely close to Glen Torridon too, an awesome valley of stupendous proportions. If a thrilling glen, a deer park and a bird observation post don't do it for you then the road to Lower Diabaig is to 'die for' followed by a walk to Redpoint.
