Families
We understand better than anyone the implications of
travelling with young children. That is why we are doing all we can
to make your hostelling experience memorable for all the right
reasons.
Children and families are welcome at all our hostels, although we
have highlighted a number of hostels within our network as
being “Family Hostels” as they are particularly well-suited to
travelling with and entertaining younger children.
Family hostels not only have private rooms available, many
with en-suite facilities, they also carry practical items such as
travel cots, high chairs, microwaves and toys. In addition there is
normally a TV and games room as well as extensive private gardens
on site where the kids can let off some steam. Close to great
attractions and activities, these family hostels offer a great base
from which to explore the area. Our helpful staff are a great
source of knowledge on places to visit and things to see and
do.
Hostelling is a very friendly and relaxed way to travel and
our ethos actively involves children.

Green Tourism
SYHA Hostelling Scotland (Torridon)
Environmental policy
Our hostel is located in one of the most
breathtakingly areas of Scotland. And we aim to do our bit to keep
it that way for future generations.
SYHA is committed to becoming a ‘greener’
association and here in Torridon we aim to lead the way. Our
ambition is to achieve the “Green Tourism Business Scheme”*** Gold
Award for excellence in environmental practice. We aim to
continually review our practices and pass on our ideas and
achievements to others within our association. We accept there will
be barriers to some of our ideas (such as lack of kerbside
recycling in the area) but we will make sure we concentrate on what
we can do.
The basics:
Recycle as much waste as possible including on
site composting. Encourage guests to take home items which are not
recyclable locally but can be commonly recycled in urban areas.
Use low energy lighting where possible.
Keep windows closed when the heating is
on.
Operate our laundry practices as efficiently
as possible.
Increase energy
efficiency:
The hostel now has improved insulation, double
glazing and solar panels.
Visual impact:
Through tree planting and sympathetic
renovations / repairs minimise the hostels intrusion on the
landscape.
Wildlife:
Promote the local National Trust for Scotland
and Scottish Natural Heritage facilities.
Create a wildlife garden at the rear of the
hostel and encourage guests to view and identify birds from the
hostel without disturbing birds.
Plant trees and Scottish wildflowers in the
hostel grounds to encourage wildlife.
Wellbeing:
Promote the limited local public transport for
guests to access the hostel by bus and train.
Provide excellent local knowledge on local
walks for guests.
Develop a herb garden for guest use to
encourage fresh & healthier cooking.
We also welcome guests comments about
additional improvements we can make and how well we are doing via
the feedback section on our micro site on syha.org.uk
