Be prepared to arrive before the local SPA shuts if you need to stock up on food, etc as it was shut at 5 (or 6) when we arrived. The hostel does have some basics such as pasta, that you can buy, but no milk, although free milk sachets were very kindly given by Jud, who was a first class 'host'. The hostel is also located some distance out of the village of Tongue, so if you fancy a meal or a pint there is a bit of a walk back up the hill in the evening.

A great place to stay, friendly warden without being in your face, great social spaces and kitchen good - weather put the drying room under a lot of pressure but it is a really well setup hostel, we loved it. Only drawback is the fast traffic on the main road outside

There is a useful facility for storing your luggage when the hostel is closed. The SPAR shop up the road, next to the petrol station, is probably more convenient and has a wider variety of produce than the Post Office/Stores in the village. Although the latter had a limited range of produce it does have a cafe where you can wait until the hostel opens at 5pm. The surrounding coast and countryside are fantastic walking country. The walk up the lane at the side of the sea inlet takes you up to the A38 at the top of the hill above Tongue village. We would recommend this hostel to anyone visiting the north of Scotland.

TRAGEDY No more Cakes!!!!!! We are sad to learn that this fabulous hostel has lost the lovely Hanne, the lady who made the cakes, and who made this hostel so great. While we wish her every success in her new position (Inverness), we wonder if anyone can match her exemplary standards in all respects. We have stayed at this beautifully situated hostel on several occasions, usually for a week at a time, and wish it well, but a hard act indeed for a new manager to follow,. Thankyou Hanne (and John) her willing and hardworking other half.

If listing Foinaven, quite an undertaking and quite a fair drive from Tongue, you could also list Ben Stack or Arkle which are nearer to the road. I comfortably did Ben Stack from the hostel. About an hour and half drive to the foot of the hill. It's well documented on several sites.

This is the best hostel i have stayed in throughout scotland. I make an effort to stay at least a week most years. If you want to escape from fast paced life to somewhere with amazing views, brilliant staff and a great hostel then this is the place. It is clean comfortable and the home baking is top notch. I hate leaving the hostel and this year like previous years we have changed plans to stay longer.

Fantastic hostel, amazing location, dry bike storage, a very warm welcome on a very wet day and lovely home-made cakes by the warden. Was slightly put off by a big group who 'took over' the kitchen / dining area and a little annoyed at being accused of stealing cake (we purchased it!) but otherwise a lovely gem of a hostel.

My sister and I had a great holiday in the Highlands, and SYHA contributed to that immensely with their no-fret, affordable and mostly comfy accommodation, not to mention the great staff we found everywhere, always willing to help and suggest hikes and places to visit. One tip off the top of my head: don't wait till the Isle of Skye to transfer your photos onto a pc - the lovely Scottish spirit of hospitality has been hardened there by the terrific surge of tourism, and people tend to be more helpful and well disposed towards guests on the mainland in the Highlands.

We thought this was the best hostel room we had ever stayed in. There were fantastic views from the windows. There were comfy seats to enjoy the views from. The bed was comfortable giving us a great night sleep as we neared the end of our LEJOG ride.
