A real gem of a hostel. A very welcome place to stay after walking, cycling or any other activity. The kitchen/living room is particularly lovely and the village has everything you could want including mountain views all around.

Lovely hostel, very helpfull and friendly staff. Not many shops in Tomintoul for buying food. I arrived at 7.30 pm and all shops shut. Luckily the Glen Avon Hotel in the main square serves very good meals till 9 pm in the bar.

We enjoyed our stay in the old school at Tomintoul. We were warm and comfortable and found the staff very helpful and pleasant. It was an easy walk to the town square and shops and great to be able to park in the old schoolyard.

Do not depend upon local shops as they close by 5. However do not let this spoil your experience of a lovely wee town.

We had a lovely meal at the clockhouse restaurant, well stocked whisky shop on the Main Street, great landscape and Glenlivet distillery only 10m away, makes Tomintoul a great destination for a quiet day off!

Super wee hostel on the edge of the Cairngorms - very difficult to arrive there by public transport - which is such a shame as the welcome from the volunteer manager was excellent.

A lovely hostel to stay at, small and convenient for the town. The town is good for tourism, galleries, pub, restaurant, tea room, shops. Good cycling roads and tracks but uninteresting landscape. It is moorland, much like the Pennines and nothing as striking as the Cairngorms to the south.

There is only one shop selling groceries in Tominoul and it shuts at 5pm. The village is attractive and well preserved with a feeling of authenticity - little appears to have changed since 1900 . The cycle ride from Aviemore station via Nethy Bridge was very beautiful.

An excellent wee hostel in the village of Tomintoul where there is an abundance of low and high level walking for all to enjoy.

Fantastic place to stay! We stumbled onto Tomintoul because we were visiting friends in Aberlour, but we will definitely be back. It is a beautiful little village sitting at the heart of the Glenlivet Estate. I could have spent days walking the trails- and they were easy enough for my 3 and 5 year old girls. Also, sites like Elgin Cathedral and Culloden are a short drive away. And, if you're into whiskey, there is a distillery around ever curve- literally! I have a feeling that Tomintoul will become a frequent site for our family holidays. The hostel is very small and just lovely. Our ensuite family room was pristine and the kitchen and laundry facilities were just what we needed. The hostel is staffed by volunteers who are also on holiday and the two who were in Tomintoul when we visited were the most engaging and friendly staff I've ever encountered at any SYHA. I can highly recommend this hostel to anyone traveling alone or with a family.

We enjoyed the walk along the River Avon deep into the Cairngorms. Also do try and visit the atmospheric former Catholic seminary at Scalan. Ben Rinnie to the north is easy to climb and has magnificent views, and there is a lot to explore on the Glenlivet estate http://www.glenlivetestate.co.uk/
