Carbisdale Castle

" Towering high above a salmon packed river ... one of the most opulent Youth Hostels in the World "
Photo of Hostel

Why not stay in a real highland castle? Built for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland in 1906, this magnificent building has housed many wealthy and influential people and even served as a royal refuge. In the main gallery a collection of Italian marble statues are on display whilst a large art collection adorns the walls of communal spaces. Situated in an area of extensive natural beauty and overlooking the river Kyle, many local woodland walks and mountain bike trails start at the front gates. Atlantic Salmon put on an impressive display at the Falls of Shin, as they battle their way up the river to their birth place. Nearby Dornoch cathedral is impressive, and not just because Madonna chose to get married there! A stay in a castle is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a perfect part of any trip to Scotland. Be warned though, some say a ghost roams the halls at night!
