This is a marvellous hostel, very comfortable with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Great location, too - lots of nice walks, fairly easy accessibility to the mountain and Aviemore . . . I had a really nice time. Thanks everyone!

January 2012

Great location, with all the atmosphere that used to be the hallmark of SYHA but has been lost in many of the newer or more urban hostels. Stock up on provisions in Aviemore before coming (no shop or pub here, though you can buy a bottle of beer from reception, including stuff from the excellent Cairngorm Brewery). Hourly bus service from Aviemore until about 16:30. If the weather's wet, the hottest drying room I've ever been in will get your gear bone dry in no time!

Two of our party were a bit late arriving - were running low on petrol and needed to find a petrol station. Staff at the Youth Hostel were very helpful in resolving this problem and were not at all phased. The food was excellent. This was the best youth hostel we have visited in Scotland.

I was a bit concerned about how to get to this hostel as it is several miles outside of Aviemore and we were without transportation; however, it was SO easy to catch a bus outside the train station and get directly to the lodge... Just beware that the buses aren't very frequent, so it may mean some sitting around!

A great hostel close to Glenmore Forest and Loch Morlich; ideally placed for the mountains but still handy for supplies at Aviemore. Aviemore is amazing. The view fantastic. So much to do. The hostel is so great that you can ask yourself why live in a hotel. We stayed for 3 nights in February - and my biggest concern before we went was if the room was warm - we had to turn the heating down...... The staff was so helpful that I have no words to express it. The hostel was clean and very much like being at home. A wee cosy living room to meet up with the other paople living there. I will go back for sure.

A useful location for most mountain activities, a proper hostel.Definitely recommended for some activities, but you have to know how to use a hostel - i.e. as a place for bags and a place to shower after a few days outdoors. After not hostelling for nearly 30 years, I had to adapt, others will find it more amenable.

cairngorm lodge is logical and maybe only choice you have,if you plane visit cairngorm mountains from aviemore side,(aviemore is8miles away).it is beatifuly placed near the loch, and you see mountains out of the windows so,it is easier to plane your activities according the wheater conditions.disadvatage could be lack of shops(one litle shop) and late check in time(5PM?????)but staff is friendly enough,so it was no problem to use facilities excluding room even when i wasnt checked in,so it didnt matter much. i had a great time there.

This hostel is superbly located for various outdoor activities. Even for us less than fit hostellers there are enough varied walks that will not kill the knees. Many walks start from the road to the ski lift car park and the local buses to and from that car park seemed frequent. ( I don't know what the buses frequency is like on Sundays).

If you do not have transport make sure you carry in sufficient food as eating out is limited. The night we were there intended walking to Glenmore Lodge Bistro to eat, but when we got there it was open for drinks, but no food that night due to a function despite their website indicating availability every night.. This seems to be a Scottish thing the service industry thinks it is run for its convenience and not the traveller. (I am Scottish but our service industry is way behind rest of Europe) Shop at campsite has very limited provisions

We visited the Cairngorms in February half-term to take our daughter skiing and as expected because of the fantastic snow and conditions the mountain was very busy, however, we were able to access the free car parks at all times and used the free shuttle bus service from the Coire Cas car park. We would advise people to car share to lessen the burden on spaces. We would advise you to purchase a lift pass on a daily basis as the weather on the mountain can close in quickly, wind speed acceleration closes the lift system, and visibility is much reduced. The cafe's on the mountain are excellent value for money, but again be prepared for a long wait at peak times. Patience and good humour is needed on a regular basis to ski in the Cairngorms, but the vista over Loch Morlich with a sunset from the top of Cairngorm is worth every wait.

Cairngorm Lodge remains my absolute favourite of your hostels. It is large, spatious and comfortable. The staff are always very helpful. It is, of course, also in a spectacular location.
