Excellent and well located hostel (5-10 min walk from the station). Good places to eat and drink nearby (Cairngorm Hotel, or - across the railway underpass - the Old Bridge Inn). For those who don't know Aviemore, it's not the prettiest village (mostly 1960s built) but it's in a great location (particularly if you're travelling by pubilc transport) with lots to do whatever your age and whatever the season, and all the local services you'll need. I've stayed at Aviemore YH several times (since the late 1980s) and it's always great to go back there.

If you have never been to this part of the country, your missing out on some of the best landscapes in Scotland. (don't forget the bug spray...)

The hostel was well situated just outside the main part of town but within 10 minutes walk to the centre where there are plenty of shops and eating places. It was clean tidy and great staff there to help you if needed. Looking forward to staying again, its a great stop off if you are up north and returning, we were at skye and we found that this was just the right distance to travel and rest up for the night before going on to the lakes.

It is easy to reach Aviemore by train and is an ideal base for a short break. The Cairngorm mountain and funicular railway and ski & snowsports centre can be reached by using the stagecoach number34 bus. If you wish to tour the area on local buses Dayrider or weekly megarider tickets can be purchased from stagecoach bus drivers. The Strathspey railway is also worth a visit. It is also possible to travel by Scotrail trains to Inverness, Kyle of Lochalsh and Thurso/Wick.

Being of a mature age and not having used a youth hostel for many years, I was very pleasantly surprised by the comfort and relaxed atmosphere at the Aviemore hostel. There were people of all ages, including families, and this meant I did not feel at all out of place. Especially for someone like me travelling on their own it was wonderful value for money and a pleasant place to stay. It's an experience I would repeat.

A well positioned hostel near all amenities(aprox 5 minute walk) but far enough out the town to experience the surroundings. A very large and well established kitchen ( no need for pot noodles while staying here guys). Apart from some of the lounge furniture being a bit worn and the decor needing a bit of a freshen up this hostel is one of the best.

There is a key code in use for the front door after 11pm so you don't have to worry about getting locked out if you're out for a drink. just remeber to ask staff for the code before you go out.

Fantastic hostel in a great location. Just a 5 min walk into town centre and train station. We enjoyed it so much we decided to stay an extra night there. Staff are very accommodating and freindly, they even advised us that we should have a private room as my son was only 11, something I never knew. The only downside is that the main lights didn't work in the common room, which the staff were aware of, and cleaning of the kitchen/dining room takes place around lunch time, would have been nice to know then we could have made alternate arrangements. There is a large hotel complex, complete with fitness suit and swimming pool just down the road from the hostel, ideal for rainy days but beware it is expensive to use the facilities. The rooms were spotlessly clean as were the toilets/was rooms. Staff use the washing machines and dryers during the day so it can be awkward if the hostel is busy. We will definitely be staying here again, and would recommend it to anyone

A lovely place to stay. Country surroundings but within walking distance of shops, cafes and activities. Great fun with children as they can help with cooking and washing up, and also enjoy some freedom in the hostel and grounds. Also parents can tuck children up at night (when old enough) and retire to common room to read and chat. Its dry when it rains and there is a great drying room for all the wet clothes! A good alternative to camping in our unreliable summers!

Aviemore youth hostel is located within an easy distance of the shops and there is a good Tesco's nearby open all week. There are lots of good walks and places to go around Aviemore (the distilleries and the cooperage among them). If you plan to wash you clothe while there be aware that staff uses the washing machines and dryers all morning and afternoon. But we never had any problems getting the washing done in the evening. There's also a freezer - belonging to the staff, but you can use for things you are going to need the next morning.
