This is a fantastically located hostel on Loch Lomond. We stayed here for one night in a private room for 3. The beds were comfy and the views great. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked both dinner and breakfast. The staff were very friendly and after a long days walk we were happy to see that we could buy a beer to enjoy the views with.

For those of you who want to walk to the top of Ben Lomond I would strongly recommend going up by the Ptarmigan Ridge and coming down by the 'popular' route rather than vice versa. I thoroughly enjoyed doing Ben Lomond this way round. You don't see Ben Lomond for quite a while but when you do it looks quite close and exhilarating. If you walk up the more popular route you have a noticeably longer ascent. We each have different 'psychological' approaches to walking up mountains but you now know mine!

Don't expect the Ritz or you'll be disappointed. Accommodation is very basic and if you're in a shared dormitory you may have nowhere to store clothing etc. The cooked breakfast was OK. An overnight stay is fine but if you plan to remain in the area the requirement to vacate the buiding during the day could be a drawback in bad weather. Great views onto the loch from the lounge and the kitchen is clean and well equipped.

I haven't been in a youth hostel since I was a teenager and we normally go camping as a family. However, we were nervous about the Scottish weather in May/June and decided to try a youth hostel. What a fantastic experience! The setting at Rowardennan is spectacular with wonderful walks on the doorstep. Or just sit in the sitting room and gaze out at the weather changing over Loch Lomond. The family room was comfortable with plenty of space for me, my husband, 13 year old daughter and 5 year old son. The cooking facilities were good, the showers warm, the staff helpful and the people we met there friendly and interesting. We'll definitely be doing this again!

great welcome and accommodation - shame about the weather - but the dring room very efficient. Dry boots in the m orning were a real luxury. One comment throughout the hostel network though. Labelling of food in the fridges is good but a special notice could be displayed particularly for milk. "Please use me" is something I often do as I tend to buy a bottle of milk as I arrive and don't want to walk with it the following day. It just makes it clear to those who haven't been able to get any, that there is milk in there that they can use without leaving anyone short. Gwyneth - Cumbria

The hostel was clean, and the people who worked there were helpful, though our room did not have a key, which was a little unsettling. Still, after a long day of hiking in the rain, the hostel's overall cleanliness and friendliness was very welcome. Just don't expect reception to open on time in the morning! This is a wonderful setting - beautifully maintained grounds - vast lawn stretching down to lake. The building is like a manor house and is very imposing and attractive. It has comfortable lounge, dining room and self-catering area have new-looking pine furniture - all very clean. The atmosphere and food at the hotel bar 15 mins. walk away did not appeal to us - very scruffy entrance and interior - and not cheap. EAt at the hostel or take your own food ! No alcohol available.

Stunningly beautiful location, and grounds, even in the mist! Most visitors doing West Highland Way, so short term visitors. Bedrooms rather cramped and so is self-catering kitchen when busy, though dining area fine. Staff could be more helpful and friendly, and shower facilities improved.

Rowerdennan is a beautiful building set in a fantastic position on the banks of Loch Lomond. We had just completed a 20 mile section of the West Highland Way and really appreciated the friendly service and comfortable surroundings we found to relax in. The facilities are excellent and the cleanliness was of a very high standard. The residents louge is amazing with fantastic views of the Loch. We will be back there soon!!

This SYHA is in a lovely spot but be ready for the track which leads to it. At the weekend it can get very busy with people visiting the Loch and at any other time (due to last winters weather) the road is very pitted and potholed. Otherwise a beautiful location.

A beautiful hostel, in a beautiful setting. We stayed with our 3 children, and picnicked by the loch, and then went swimming and paddling. Next time, I think we would stay for longer, as there is so much to do there. Comfortable family room (no ensuite), decent kitchen facilities with views of the water, and a large sitting room. The staff were lovely.
