I arrived on boxing day and stayed two nights. I was welcomed bij the friendly staff. As check in is normally 15.00 hours. Due to the quete periode, they gave me a room on my own with a double bunk bed. And i could check in by 13.00 hours. The staff was helpfull. The room was clean.private toilet and shower. I come to this hostel allready for years. It improved everytime i stay. It got WIFI, an Wii games. It is near the centre foodstores next to it which are open 7 days a week till late The kitchen is well equiped and there is tv in the eating lounge with lots of channels. It is also rather warm, heaters everywhere. There is a lot of competition at hotels and hostels in Edinburgh due to recession. But YHA Edinburgh is worth every penny.

Everyone in our group - children and adults alike - agrees that Edinburgh Central is a superb hostel. All the staff are so friendly, the food is great and the rooms are very comfortable. Parking two minibuses somewhere close each night was a bit of a challenge, but we managed somehow! Thank you to everyone at the hostel for helping to make our stay in Scotland so successful. We plan to return before too long.

Great hostel, busy but friendly. Very clean, great facilities. Not enough lockers in rooms for one each though, so bear that in mind if biringing valuables you want to keep in your room. Edinburgh Central is a fantastic and well run hostel, with friendly and helpful staff. It is very well equipped for self catering, with shops close by and in a good location for exploring the city. The one caveat is that you may need to be prepared to use the facilities at extreme hours if you don't want to compete with large groups of teenagers that monopolise everything communal!

We went to stay during Edinburgh Festival and had a family room for 5 of us which was spaceous, ensuite, clean, bright with comfortable beds and even a small table and couple of chairs for us to sit at. There was plenty of storage space in the room and overall this was definitely one of the better youth hostels we have stayed at in terms of provision for a family. I would definitely stay there again.

This is a great hostel for many reasons. It has a good, central location and is within walking distance of the railway station. The hostel has every facility needed for a city stay. The rooms are adequate with comfortable beds and good showers. My only slip up this stay was I forgot to bring my pad-lock for the locker in the room. I took a risk and left my belongings in there anyway. No one touched it. My fellow hostelers, thank you!

It's not very far from the Waverly station which is very easy to access from the airport. The staff were friendly and genuinely helpful. The restaurant was great as well. You got a lot of good food, for a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone traveling to Edinburgh.

The reception staff were most helpful and friendly and I was pleased to be allocated to a 4 bed dorm on the lower ground floor. It was very clean and quiet and locker space was available for each bed. With an en suite shower it was not only available when I wanted it but it was a really great shower :) The kitchen however was lacking in space for such a large hostel. Even though I checked in early, there wasn't any space at all in the two fridges. In addition, I wasn't able to make my morning coffee because the very slow electric stoves were entirely unsuitable for my stove top coffee maker and although there was a plunger pot, it was very large and far to big for one or two cups.

I leave Edinburgh as soon as I touchdown if at all possible. However, the EDI Central hostel is a great place to stay. It is so easy to get to all of the important EDI places from the hostel, or the bus, which runs regularly, is just 100 yards away. The kitchen is pleasant and the dining room is large enough to accommodate many. I really like the capability to come and go at will since it is a 24 hour hostel. The bunkrooms are large enough and I appreciate the ensuite facilities. If I must stay in EDI, then it is Central for me!

This hostel is OK but not really all that central to Edinburgh. The directions to it are not the clearest. It's clean etc but has little atmosphere. A few more Scots at the counter would be nice. My Polish isn't terrific. The place is too dear for what you get. The private ones in the Old Town seem to offer better deals. In sum-OK but not memorable

We stayed here for the Ireland Scotland match and were located in the lower ground floor in the front of the hostel which was fine. We've stayed here before on one of the upper floors and given the location of the police station it can be quite noisy on a saturday night as we're able to hear the emergency vehicles driving past us on Leith walk. Lower ground level was fine as any noise seemed to rise above us, The rooms are great with on suite facilities at reasonable rates. Edinburghs great with loads of entertainment the royal mile, the old town ghost walks etc etc

We had a great overnight stay at Edinburgh Central - our room was clean and private and has everything we needed. It was only a short walk to all the main attractions of the city. However, the hostel was difficult to locate on a map at the bus terminal, despite being quite obvious from the street. More information about how to find the hostel would be useful for travellers. The food available for breakfast appeared expensive also.

I and my son aged 6 stayed at this SYH. We were impressed with the hostel overall, however, I felt some services, such as leaving the luggage should be provided free of charge for the guest. We paid £59 for a twin room and extra £5 for leaving the lugagge on the dates of arrival and departure. We travelled on the night train therefore unless we wanted to drag our bags in the hilly Edingburgh, we had to use the facility at the YH. The breakfast was not included so if we took this option, it would have costed us further £4.50-£8 per person. There was no dicount for children, though my son would not have managed to eat everything. This means, for B&B, this YH would have costed approx £70 per day, which is comparable to B&B in the area. I was not very happy about the value for money, which should be the strength of YH.

Overall, the hostel was a good, cheap and well positioned place to stay for our Edinburgh visit.

Visit the little museums in the high street, the writers museum, the museum of childhood, etc. Anyone interested in music should visit the music library on George the 4th Bridge. A clean, secure and centrally located hostel. We shared a twin room with ensuite which was basic, but very clean and comfortable. You can hire towels from the hostel for £1 (certainly worth doing so as not to have to lug your own along) and there are secure lockers near to reception to store luggage after checking out. All in all a great value stay for half the price of a hotel - would definately recommend.

SYHA EDINBURGH central hostel is not value for money. The hostel did not meet our expectations. We had stayed in London paying roughly the same amount. This hostel charged every facility at more expensive rates (e.g., lockers, internet) and had fewer things in the breakfast for same price. My advice - please look elsewhere before booking here.

We LOVED this hostel. The location was great. The kitchen and laundry room were clean and convenient. Our room was simple but clean and comfortable. The lobby area was very pleasant and we enjoyed eating breakfast with other guests. Wifi worked well. We appreciated the lift. The only negative was parking, which I think is probably true for any place this close to the old town.

This is a lovely facility in a site not far from the heart of Edinburgh. It's very clean, the staff is friendly, and it's a great way to meet many different fellow travelers. However it has hotel-like prices without hotel-like amenities- don't forget to bring your own towels or plan to rent them from the hostel. If you arrive early, expect that you'll need to pay to store your bags there. If you want to go online, expect to pay for it. All-in-all I'd stay there again, but only if i couldn't find a hotel for the same rate.

If travelling to or from South-West Scotland by bus, try to avoid using any of the routes in the 'Dumfries and Galloway' Bus timetable, as they are very slow, painfully slow. Instead, use the excellent bus run by 'Citylink' from Edinburgh/Glasgow for the Belfast Ferry; you are allowed to get off at Stranraer and do NOT have to book a ferry crossing to Northern Ireland. You have to book for this bus (eg in person at the Edinburgh bus station or on-line). For 'Minigaff' (now called 'Newton Stewart' youth hostel go back down the pier and take a bus from the company 'James King of Kirkcowan' which employs only very friendly and helpful drivers. Their buses will carry bikes (Minigaff is a good location for Mountain bikes, being close to the 7-stanes), most likely just in the boot; 'City link' only carry bikes in a box. There is also a train service to Stranraer--- from Glasgow via either Ayr or Kilmornock, and from Carlisle via Dumfries, Kilmarnock and Ayr.

Modern, spotlessly clean and bright hostel. Excellent location right on Leith Walk, close to the end of Princes Street. Parking in the NCP car park nearby is expensive, though - better to arrive by train or bus. Both stations are quite nearby. Parking for wheelchair users could be a problem. The Omnia cinema and restaurant complex is very handy. I stayed in a twin room with my 14-year-old daughter. We went to a show in the Playhouse (practically across the road) and a meal at Khublai Khan Mongolian grill restaurant in Assembly Street at the other end of Leith Walk, where you select your own combination for a stir fry on the big 'shield' hot plate. We hit the shops on Cockburn Street (on the other side of Waverley) and up the Bridges for alternative and festie clothing and a skateboard (!) then along Princes Street for the big HMV and spent a couple of hours downstairs playing the video games.

When you arrive at your destination get a map of the area with places to visit and stay and what entertainment is available. There are plenty around in libraries or hostels or information centre and they are free. Check out the bus services of the place you are staying as they do various special offer tickets if you wish to travel around town and the suburbs of that town. Its fun and its cheap.

The Waverley Train station is about 10-15 minutes walk from the Youth Hostel. Our young son particularly loved the Camera Obscura (and all its visual illusions) and the attraction 'Our Dynamic Earth' was a major hit. Both visits take about 1.5 to 2 hours. We loved the Hub Cafe, on the Royal Mile, close to the Castle, with its bright colours and comfy sofas. It's good for coffee and cakes and lunches. Ness clothing is particularly worth a browse, ladies, for its brightly coloured tweeds and accessories.

A great youth hostel, and if you've used hostels before you'll be more than satfisfied with this: the facilities are great, the bistro and bar are great value, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Just bear in mind that this is a very popular hostel, with lots of people willing to and fro, so it will not feel as personal or cozy as the smaller hostels. Also, it's in a city, and not everyone will be booking here with the intention of getting an early night/early start: some will be in Edinburgh for the nightlife, so could make the nights rowdy and slightly unpleasant as I found on one occasion. But this is nothing to do with the hostel per se, but the other people. All in all, very good, and would definitely go again.

I had a great stay here, friendly helpful staff, great atmosphere, belting food, nice clean room, i stayed in a 4 bunk room on the 2nd floor with easy access either from the stairs or lifts. Tip1: if you are new to, or returning to youth hosteling as I was, throw a towel or item of clothing on your bunk to show it has been taken, otherwise it may appear to be an empty bunk and you may get a surprise when you jump in your bunk in the dark. Tip 2: If you have a disability, it would be wise to inform the hostel when booking, either on-line or by phone, of your needs & requirements to avoid any disappointment on arrival. Yes, I would recommend this hostel as a great friendly place to stay.

We had a nice stay in Edinburgh in august. the streets are very crowdy but we enjoyed the small shows of the Fringe festival. Edinburgh is iundergoing major road works at the moment, so those planning to use a GPS in the car... it's not very easy to get to the Youth Hostel! Otherwise the hotel is situated at a crossroad that remains busy at night and our room was therefore very noisy...and warm as we could not open the window beacause of the noise. Also there is no ventilation in the rooms... thank god we had a private room. Nevertheless, I recommend the youth hostel for short stays, but plan to have more restful nights afterwards ;-)

What the Edinburgh Central hostel lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in its location (though the directions to people on foot needs some work). I appreciated all of its green facilities. Once you figure your way around all the current road construction and road blockages as a result (just in time for Edinburgh's high tourist season), its location makes it easy to get to the Royal Mile, the Old Town, shopping on Princes Street, etc. It's a 15 minute walk from the Royal Mile. I recommend the free (but donate a tip at the end) historical walks that are in brochures at the hostel. It’s a fun way to get to know the city. If you don't mind the cholesterol, the Castle Rock shop on Grassmarket in the Old Town is a source of deep fried Mars Bars!

Excellent example of a city centre youth centre, ideally located close to, but not in the centre of the city. Eat and drink in the immediate, residential, area and feel like a local rather than a tourist

The location of the hostel is fantastic for a city break in Edinburgh as nearly everything is within walking distance - the location will only be bettered once the tram line works are complete in 2011. The facilities at the hostel are as better than some hotels with all of the staff being freindly and helpful. I would recomend this hostel to any one considerting staying in Edinburgh.

Very centrally located - but it's a bit more than a 10 minute walk if you have luggage with you!

Leith Walk, on which the hosteo stands, is a fascinating cosmopolitan area.

I liked the bar and brekfast facilities as I was travelling light and didn't want to have to cook. The hostel is easily accessed by bike and there are some pretty good cycle paths to use. I approached Edinburgh using the Union canal and there is a cycle route taking you across the Meadows and up to the Royal Mile from where it is all down hill to Leith Walk. Leaving I joined a cycle trail which jpined NCN 1 to cross the Forth Road bridge then onto the Fife Coastal route to Kirkcaldy.

Very good location and competively priced - even for mid August when the Fringe is in full swing and good accomodation is hard to find. Will be going back again next year.

Nice hostel. Great staff. and anyone who complains about the 500m walk from the train station should not be backpacking in the first place.
