Great cycling in the vacinity
Mini Gaff - Wales
Minigaff hostel was adequate and in a fairly attractive area. It did not offer anything over the basic but nevertheless it was a decent place to stay. One slight concern was the entrance/exit which was on a busy rural road with limited view of approaching traffic.

Hostel has a great kitchen and a friendly lounge / dining area. The drying room is efficient and has been well tested. Plenty of free off street parking. Excellent fast food and supermarkets in the town - Aldi is the best value. Superb Mountain Biking within a few minutes ride.

This was our first experience of youth hostel. Travelling with 3 boys aged 8 to 13 can be expensive! We had a great experience at Newton Stewart. Very comfortable and clean beds. Friendly accommodating staff. Very clean rooms. Only negative would be limited number of showers, although this didn't actually present any problems for us as it was quite quiet during our stay. Definitely recommend.

Minnigaff Youth Hostel is a great base for a cycling or walking holiday in the Galloway Forest park, situated just outside Newton Stewart.. It has good facilities for preparing food and a nice lounge for relaxing in after a day in the forest.

Comfortable hostel with excellent cooking, dining and relaxing facilities in a beautiful part of Dumfries and Galloway. Good centre for outdoor activities - hillwalking, mountainbiking and wildlife photography. Excellent place to stay if taking part in the Newton Stewart Walking Festival with good drying facilities for those wet days!

On reflection I can't think of anything particularly bad about this hostal - its just that I can't think of anything particularly good about it. The Galloway Arms just down the road is well worth a visit for a real fat boy meal and pleasant atmosphere however.

The drying room is a huge bonus especially as I was cycling and it was raining very heavily so I had dry gear to start the next day.

Great wee hostel, 10 mins walk to town and only 5 to nearest pub, friendly and a good option for small groups and families, its also on the national cycle sustrans route, we hired nice reliable bikes from HDI across the bridge and headed to Killoughtree for the day to do some mountain bike routes. There is a community cinema and pool in town too.
Superb MTBing within a few miles. By cycle? Route 7 - might be long way round but you'll enjoy the peace. By train? Go to Barrhill and cycle down to the hostel - you don't need your 4x4. By bus? Buy an area ticket from Dumfries - the cheapest method. Lots of excellent takeaways in the town - all within easy walking distance.

Get the train to Barrhill from Glasgow and cycle down minor road as it is only 17 miles. MTBing heaven so close and you don't need a car.
