Melrose hostel is the best Borders location for walking, for tennis/golf, for the family/kids, for meeting people from all over the world and for the peaceful, easy feeling that you have escaped from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I love it.

a pleasant enough hostel but it seems reluctant to take the plunge into the twenty first century. stuck with good things from the past but also a slight austerity that doesn't necessarily add to ones comfort

Melrose hostel has a good bike shelter, good, well kept grounds, and is very near the town centre, (a few minutes walk), handy for public transport and shopping if you need these services. Good car parking at the hostel, and a free car park right next to it also. A quiet place, no vandalism, plenty to see and do near at hand. MUST-DO, go and watch a rugby match, 5 minutes walk from hostel (you pass 3 good pubs going there).

This hostel is centrally placed within Melrose and accessible for touring the borders and walking St. Cuthberts Way. The main areas were clean and staff helpfull, however the hostel is in need of modernisation. If you all you want is a warm, dry bed for the nite with accessible local services then the hostel is hard to beat.

walk to Sir walter scotts House from hostel takes 2hours plus but a visit there is a must as it has a lot to offer in that it has so amny amazing historical relics and this writer was so important to Scotish history and identity. Melsose was so much more than I expected as it was only a rest stop on our cycle tour. Lots of local produce from local shops - two historic NT gardens and the Abbey to visit as well. Many great walks up on the hills. A real terat in the borders among fine scottish folk.

There are, I think, 16 dormitories in this hostel, so at least 50 people could be staying. There are 3 ladies and 2 mens toilets for the whole hostel! There should be more, since people tend to want to use them at the same times in the morning. I will not stay again. The poorest Scottish hostel we have stayed at.

I stayed here for 1 night with my group of 5 men who where cycling the coast to castles, the Youth Hostel was ideal for our purpose. the building is quite magnificant with beautiful grounds and is in an ideal location being close to melrose centre and also on the cycle route. We booked a private room for 6 which was clean & warm, the hostel was full during our stay & found we had to cue for the toilets. We paid for the cooked breakfast which was fair value, but again with the hostel being full the breakfast room was over crowded. There was Good dry secure bike storage around the back of the hostel which is a necessity. I would recommend anybody staying here if you are looking for good clean no frills accomodation and especially f you are cycling the coast to castles.

We went to Edingburgh from Melrose on a sunday. It was an easy journey, but we wasted a lot of time finding the park and ride depots, only to discover that the train link doesn't operate on sundays and the bus service is greatly curtailed. We drove all of the way in, in the end and parked just outside of the centre near the path that takes you into town alongside the waters of Leith - an easy walk in.

Fabulous location to explore Melrose, a very attractive Borders town, and the surroundng area. Eildon hills very close by for the walkers. The Melrose YH is very clean and this is carried out between 10 am and 2 pm limiting access between those times. Remember a torch as beds have no individual overhead lights.

MELROSE is very well located in easy walking distance to town and also walks in the surrounding areas. We don't always find cyclists considerate of others- they often start zipping up their bags etc very early in the mornings. Once some folk re-packed their total gear at 6:30 am to the annoyance of others-someone complained so they moved outside but had no thought for the guys staying in the dorm room to which they moved outside of!! They also copped the lack of consideration.

All the border towns are within a reasonable distance of Melrose and there is an excellent bus service in the Borders region. Melrose is an attractive town and there are a number of coffee shops, a theatre, and small businesses, Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott is nearby well worth a visit. For walkers, there are the Eildon Hills - Melrose is the 'hub' for the long distance path network.

A very old-fashioned YH, with a dour Scottish welcome at reception. I don't recommend the larger communal dorms - the women's one involves a long trek from basement to first floor showers, through reception and entrance hall. The one WC at basement level is unisex. The kitchen and dining room facilities are very good, and if you book a small [2 or 4-person] room, you are near the showers and get a much better deal. The YH is very centrally situated, and was geographically the perfect base for the Borders Book Festival which I attended in the town. There is also excellent walking - totably along the Tweed - straight from the hostel.

Thirteen of is arrived at the hostel at Melrose after cycling 70+ miles from Seahouses as part of the Coast & Castles bike ride... the SYHA sign was a very wecome site as you can imagine. All the facilities we needed were either at the hostel (e.g. secure bike storage) or in the town which was a very short walk away. We were pleasantly surprised to find an excellent italian restaurant in the town to carb up in before the final ride the next day to Auld Reekie....
