Berneray

Berneray is a beautiful island with a small, friendly community of crofters and fishermen.

This unique hostel, operated by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust, is a traditional thatched croft on the beach overlooking the sound of Harris. A walk up Beinn Shleibhe and Borve Hill offer superb and contrasting views of the many surrounding islands as well as of Berneray itself.

A wide variety of birds can be seen across the island, with seals and otters in the sea and coastline outside the hostels.

Advance booking is not available at Berneray. When you arrive, just find and claim an empty bed, which will be yours for the duration of your stay. Overnight Fee £20 / Junior Overnight Fee £10. Camping is no longer permitted at the hostel.

The hostel sits on the seashore of North Uist where you can enjoy the relaxed pace of island life with friendly residents and good local amenities.

Berneray Hostel is right on the Butt of Lewis to Vatersay walking and cycling routes and, as summer daylight hours are very long (in late June some nights are never completely dark), you can fit a lot of walking/cycling into your trip! It also enjoys a relatively mild climate thanks to the Gulf Stream giving you a nice change to mainland Scotland.

Berneray is pretty compact with good ferry and bus routes making it really easy to explore the whole island.

There are few street lights but you'll see the stars, the moon, nearby planets and the Milky Way. If you're lucky you might catch the Northern Lights.
