Applecross, Hartfield House

About About this hostel

Hartfield House is a Visit Scotland 4 Star hostel, set back from the main North Coast 500 road, in the peace and tranquility of the mountainous landscape. The hostel is surrounded by shady trees, fields of Highland Cattle, and a beautiful river passes nearby.

The main township on the Applecross peninsula (‘A’Chomraich’ in Gaelic, which means 'sanctuary') is located around the picturesque bay and enjoys uninterrupted views over the island of Raasay and the Cuillin Hills of Skye.

Hartfield House is approximately 3/4 mile from the bay, and is reached via one of the highest routes in the UK, the Bealach na Ba. At 640 metres this winding, breathtaking route is a must for most road cyclists, and forms part of the Bealach Beag and Bealach Mor cyclosportives, as well as the Celtman Solo race.

With the sheltered waters of the Inner Sound and spectacular mountains right on the doorstep, Hartfield House is an ideal place to base yourself for trekking, cycling, mountain biking, kayaking and climbing.

A large building set in its own grounds, Hartfield sleeps 50 in a mix of single, twin, triple, and dorm rooms with shared facilities. There are also a number of ensuite double and family rooms. There are hot showers, restful common areas, a dining room and kitchen, drying room, laundry, bike store, large garden, and function hall for weddings and events. There is a local shop, and two restaurants within a 15 to 30-minute walk or 5 to 10 minutes in the car.

The bunkhouse and main house can also be booked on a RentaHostel, exclusive private hire basis with prices starting from £300 for the bunkhouse and £500 for the main house. Please contact the hostel directly to enquire.

Reasons to visit

The Applecross peninsula is rich in cultural, religious and Viking heritage, and offers sites of historic and archaeological interest. Those include an Iron Age roundhouse, 2,000-year-old broch and hut circles, and a fascinating connection with Maelrubha.

Applecross boasts spectacular geology and a wealth of plant, marine and wildlife, with regular sightings of otters, sea and golden eagles, seals and dolphins. Further afield are the Torridon mountains and the beautiful islands of Skye and Raasay where you can see whales and dolphins in their natural environment.

An award-winning Applecross Inn has a buzzing atmosphere and excellent hearty meals, as well as breath taking views from the beer garden. The outstanding Walled Garden restaurant is located within the glorious Applecross Estate Walled Garden and provides excellent seafood, freshly caught each day, as well as offering a great vegetarian and vegan menu, and daily specials. What better way to eat than amongst the flowers!

Lying approximately 80 miles/2 hours’ drive from Inverness, Applecross is a fantastic location for those wishing to get away from it all.
