Eating out:

  • In Forfar - Indian, Chinese, Turkish, native restaurants and usual chips shops 
  • In Kirriemuir - 3 Bellies Brae (pub), takeaways in centre, hotels (N.B. prior booking advisable)
  • The Clova Hotel - near the top of Glen Clova. Good restaurant & bar meals. (14 miles)
  • The But & Ben - Auchmithie (01241 877223)- still serve High Tea . Near the beach (30 miles)
  • The Drovers Inn - Memus (turn left past Dykehead). Tel-01307-860322 - Bar and restaurant (8 miles)
  • The Round House Lintrathen - off the B951 Kirriemuir/Glenisla Road (about 20 minutes drive). Tel-01575-560340.  Not cheap, but very good food. Nice bar, and the restaurant is in an old (round) horse-mill. Nice place. (8 miles)
  • Kookaburra Restaurant - (Foresterseat, just south of Forfar on the Arbroath road). Tel-01307 818005. Quirky Australian cuisine, good food & good value. (10 miles)
  • Park Tavern - Roundyhill Kirriemuir
  • Chapelbank Hotel - Forfar (01307 463151)
  • Finavon Hotel - Finavon (on the A94 north of Forfar. Tel: 01307-850234) - good pub food

By Bus: nearest bus stop is Kirriemuir, 9 miles. If you wish to walk from here, follow the "by car" directions

By Train: nearest station is Dundee, 29 miles.

By Car: On reaching Kirriemuir follow the signs to Glen Prosen & Cairngorms National Park (ignore sign to Glenisla). These take you out on the B955 to Dykehead. At Dykehead the main road bears right, you fork left signed Prosen (the “P” is currently missing from the sign!), but there is a sign to the hostel to make up! Carry on for 7 miles to Glenprosen village. The public road ends in at a red telephone kiosk in the village. Here you turn acute right, with a large yellow house on your right, and head up a tarmaced track. You will find the Hostel after about 150m (once the tarmac gives out).
