By Sea
A frequent and efficient ferry service links the larger islands with the Shetland Mainland and passenger fares are nominal.

Drive-on/drive-off services operate to the islands of Bressay, Whalsay, Yell, Unst, Fetlar and Skerries. Passenger services operate Papa Stour, Foula and Fair Isle.

Ferries from Aberdeen arrive at the main Holmsgarth terminal, which is about a mile north of the old harbour. There's a regular bus service between Lerwick and Sumburgh airport (50 mins) run by John Leask & Son, Tel. 693162. Taxis (around £25) and car hire are also available. All island bus services start and end at the Viking bus station, which is on Commercial Road, a short distance north of the town centre. The town is small and everything is within easy walking distance.

By Air
Loganair operate a regular scheduled inter-island service from Tingwall (Lerwick) Airport to the islands of Foula, Papa Stour, Out Skerries and Fair Isle. There is also a regular service to Fair Isle from Sumburgh Airport. This service, not only provides a convenient sand fast means of transport, but also a fascinating view of the archipelago.

By Road
Shetland has around 900 km (500 miles) of good roads. Personal transport is recommended to get the most out of a Shetland holiday. Either bring your own car or arrange for a self-drive car on the islands. Bicycles are also available for hire. All inhabited islands are accessible by frequent ferry service or road-bridge. An extensive public bus service operates throughout Shetland and, during the summer months, a range of coach tours will take you to particular places of interest. Exploring the islands is easy and very enjoyable.

An Inter-Shetland Transport Timetable, published by Shetland Islands Council, contains details of all air, sea and bus services.
